For the most part, I am a non-drinker. However, I’ve had several sips of wine from time to time at family gatherings during the holidays. Some were good, some were... awful. Some tasted sweet, some seem to burn my throat and have a weird after taste. My parents say that wine is an acquired taste. Hopefully, I can learn to really enjoy wine of any kind as I plan on doing frequent tastings throughout the course of this semester.
Personally, I like the taste of white wines. They seem to be the more fruity types of wine. I think it’s hard to find one that tastes awful, because they give such fruity flavors. White wines seem to be the safest bet. I’ve tried a moscato, and it almost tasted like plain juice.
The first time I ever had a sip of red wine, I tasted a bunch of chemicals. It had a really bad alcohol taste, and left a strong residual taste in my mouth. I didn’t enjoy it too much. A family member told me that I should try ‘lighter’ red wines whenever I get the chance to. After my positive experience with white wine, I always thought that all wines would be sweet like juice, but I was surprised when the bitterness of red wine hit my palate.
From a source, I read that drinking wine has health benefits. I remember the article talking about how good one glass of wine per day is for your health, and especially to those who have high blood pressure. Throughout the course, I hope to learn more about the health benefits of drinking wine, because I guess you could say that it’s what sparked my sudden interest in wine.
